Study English literature from Greek to classical, Shakespeare to contemporary popular culture, via classic works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. You will explore these texts in their cultural-historical contexts and within wider theoretical frameworks, considering the ways they function in society. English is introduced within exciting interdisciplinary contexts and benefit from the wide range of subject expertise within the English subject group both Literature and Linguistics respectively.
Our Linguistics and Literature modules encapsulate a wide range of texts, genres, and themes from the early medieval period to the present day. Through a range of optional modules as electives, you may get a chance to make a free choice of choosing English Language or Literature to specialize in either part of the subject. The Language modules aim to provide an understanding of the historical, social, and psychological factors that shape the English language used in everyday life, while the Literature modules are designed to foster interpretive skills applying to a wide range of genres and historical periods.
Year one introduces key skills necessary for the advanced study of English Literature and Language. You will study the historical developments of the language and literature in English, alongside approaches to textual analysis and interpretation.
Year One modules will also introduce key study skills including academic writing and independent learning. Literature Modules cover a wide range of writing in English, from the Middle Ages to the present, and cater to every major genre that is drama, fiction, prose, poetry and nonfictional prose, language modules, including topics ranging from the context, history, and regional variations of English to child language acquisition and multilingualism.
In Years Two and Three, you will have the freedom to plan the specific path that you follow through the program.
Year Two focuses on the major periods of English Literature and core aspects of English Language study. Modules available examine the kinds of literature of specific historical periods, e.g. the medieval, Victorian, or modernist, or areas of language study including child language acquisition or psycholinguistics.
In Year Three the emphasis is on specialization within different literary genres and the social, legal, and other contexts of the English language. You will also develop skills of independent research – for instance, by choosing to write a dissertation on a topic of your design – and you will also have the option to take a work placement module that will give you work experience with an organization relevant to your degree.
Academic modules are taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and independent study. You will study six to seven modules per year. Most modules are the equivalent of a weekly two-three-hour lecture. You will be guided about study time preparing for classes, reading primary texts, and completing research projects.
The English department focuses on the blended learning environment to provide the students with a zestful learning experience. Auxiliary online materials are available and there will be various events and activities to further enhance the learning.
The allocation of supervision for this course is the responsibility of the Faculty of English which caters to the students’ interest to pursue the meticulous research work. Students are also supported throughout the course, by their supervisors, who are in continuous alliance and assistance with the students to produce meticulous research work.
All the modules are assessed by coursework, including presentations, essays, creative writing options, online writing activities, such as various blogs and discussions.
The minimum duration for completion of a BS degree is four years. As allowed by HEC, it can be completed in a maximum period of seven years.
Before applying for a degree, you should first check that we recognize your higher secondary/tertiary education qualification. This can include:
- Pakistani Based Examinations: Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or equivalent with any discipline or three years Diploma of Associate Engineer (DAE) in any discipline
- British System: GCE A Level with any subjects
- International Baccalaureate (IB): The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP) from external Examining body Geneva, Switzerland with any subjects
- 45% marks are required in all cases described above.
- Equivalence Certificate for A-Level/IB and other qualification holders from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC) Islamabad, Pakistan.
- Admission test administered by the university.
BS (Hons) English holders are eligible for pursuing their Postgraduate degrees in the subject of English Literature and thus become further capable for the job of a content writer, news editor, lecturer/teacher to teach the subject at various levels, and many more.

BS English, MPhil English Literature, and MPhil Applied Linguistics ensures students’ engagement with Reading and writing in various rhetorical contexts, interpreting and analyzing a broad array of texts and genres, developing and sustaining criticality, understanding various approaches to second language acquisition, Multiple historical and cultural contexts of language and literature, the terminology, methodology and theories of English Studies, and majorly focusing on the production of independent research.
The Department of Languages, in the concerned faculty is responsible for awarding a 4 year program of BS English. in Given the scope of this degree program, in which the instruction medium is English, different types of literature styles and literature periods of English are completely read and understood with the help of different courses related to criticism and textual analysis, both the comparative and American literature are thoroughly offered to students so they can get a better understanding of various literatures and cultures. This program offers a vast prospect in which psychological, social, and biological viewpoint of the language are catered by the means of linguistic courses. Additionally, elective courses are offered from various disciplines whereby the students are equipped with the information, skills, and competencies necessary to conduct interdisciplinary academic research.
In the next five years, we look forward to better integrating the department’s various programs by spotlighting 21st-Century Literary and Linguistic Studies. Our vision of literary studies centers on diversity, as indicated in our search priorities. Our classes and co-curricular programming will encourage students to see the difference the social sciences make in the various communities they engage and transit.
