Program Overview
The MPhil in Applied Linguistics is a two-year program that offers an in-depth exploration of language teaching and applied linguistics. This program provides a comprehensive understanding of how language functions in society and its relevance to current issues, allowing students to delve into a broad spectrum of language-related topics.
Candidates will study the complexities of linguistic and literary studies and their connections to various academic fields such as Cultural Studies and Philosophy. The curriculum encourages extensive research on the formal aspects of language, supported by stimulating coursework, diverse teaching methods, and a supportive academic environment.
The program comprises eight courses: two core courses and six electives. The core courses cover essential subjects like Linguistic Theories and Research Methods in Linguistics. Elective courses include:

- Cognitive Linguistics

In the first year of the program, students are required to complete 24 credit hours of coursework. The second year is dedicated to a research project, allowing students to apply their knowledge and contribute original findings to the field.

Teaching
The English department focuses on developing a welcoming environment where students can study effectively by engaging in a variety of activities. Various meaningful activities and events are arranged such as seminars and symposiums in relation to research. This does not only improve the skill set, but also provides the students with the opportunity to interact with famous names in their field. The faculty of the Department of Languages is responsible for assigning supervisors for research projects, and this is done in accordance with the preferences of the students. Students are guided by their supervisors throughout, working together constantly to produce practical research.
Assessment
All the modules are assessed by coursework, followed by term papers and research articles, as well as presentations, essays, and online writing exercises, tests, and assignments.
Duration
According to the HEC, a minimum of two and maximum four years are allowed for the completion of the degree along with all the requirements.
Entry Requirement
Pakistan Based Examinations:
- Bachelor (Hons) of 8-10 semesters with 124-140+ Credits Hours.
- MA/MSc (16 years of education)
International Qualifications:
- Any qualification/degree program which is declared equivalent to Masters by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Minimum 2.00/4.0 CGPA in semester system or second division (i.e. 45 percentile score) under the annual system examination is required to apply for admission in MPhil Applied Linguistics.
UChenab entry test and interview are mandatory.

Funding
As far as funding at postgraduate level is concerned, we grant scholarships but only to a few but very competent students. The scholarship opportunities provides by the external associations are also included in these funds.

In the Department of Languages, the concerned faculty is responsible for awarding a 4-year program of BS English. Given the scope of this degree program, in which the instruction medium is English, different types of literature styles and literature periods of English are completely read and understood with the help of different courses related to criticism and textual analysis, both the comparative and American literature are thoroughly offered to students so they can get a better understanding of various literatures and cultures. This program offers a vast prospect in which psychological, social, and biological viewpoint of the language are catered by the means of linguistic courses. Additionally, elective courses are offered from various disciplines whereby the students are equipped with the information, skills, and competencies necessary to conduct interdisciplinary academic research.
We also target to foster an aptitude for advanced learning and research among our students. For this, our faculty members dedicate themselves to impart collaborative and meticulous ambiance. Faculty areas of specialization are disparate and wide-ranging including studies in Applied Linguistics and Literature. MPhil English Literature and MPhil Applied Linguistics ensure students’ engagement with Reading and writing in various rhetorical contexts, interpreting and analyzing a broad array of texts and genres, developing and sustaining criticality, understanding various approaches to second language acquisition, Multiple historical and cultural contexts of language and literature, the terminology, methodology and theories of English Studies, and majorly focusing on the production of independent research.
In the next five years, we look forward to better integrating the department’s various programs by spotlighting 21st-Century Literary and Linguistic Studies. Our vision of literary studies centers on diversity, as indicated in our search priorities. Our classes and co-curricular programming will encourage students to see the difference the social sciences make in the various communities they engage and transit. We encourage faculty to join learning communities devoted to enhancing our pedagogy and making it more inclusive, we will further expand the pedagogical training and mentoring we offer to our graduate students.
